The question shouldn't be 'is it possible?', but rather 'how to do we achieve it?'

What types of companies hire engineers?

  1. Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin's mechanical engineers apply research to planning, desinging, developing, and testing new systems for their consumers. Some fields where Lockheed products are used include space research, IT, and the U.S. armed forces. The types of prodcuts that mechanical engineers, working for Lockheed Martin, engineer include engines, robots, machines and heat transfer systems. Another side of Lockheed Martin is, their Skunkworks division (their Research and Development division). One are of research that mechanical engineers at the Skunkworks division are involved in is fusion energy.

A few Lockheed Martin products include:

    • the Hubble Telescope
    • Phoenix Mars Lander
    • F-22
    • Radar Technologies
    • Satellites
    • Spacecraft

A few services offered by Lockheed Martin for employees are:
    • Reimbursement if pursing a higher degree
    • Operations Leadership Development Program (OLDP)
    • Finance Leadership Development Program (FLDP)
    • Engineering Leadership Development Program (ELDP)
    • Communications Leadership Development Program (CLDP)

Professional services offered by Lockheed Martin:
    • Consulting
    • IT Asset Management
    • Enterprise Design
    • Infrasturcture design and installation
    • Desktop and Network support

Working at Lockheed is interesting. Most of their employees, especially their engineers, have a security clearence. Additionally, the hours are flexible. One common program within Lockheed Martin is the 9-80 program. This requires employees to work 40 hours the first week (divided among the 5 days however they like) and 40 more hours the following week (only split across Monday-Thursday). This allows employees on this schedule to take every other Friday off. Another bonus to this schedule is that employees can even shift their hours around and take off every Friday. Of course, there is going to be overtime and sometimes it's paid. The average salary for a Lockheed mechanical engineer is about $80,000/year. Lastly, Lockheed Martin mechanical engineers typically work in the southern half of the country, because that is where Lockheed's factories are.

  2. Tesla Motors

Mechanical Enigneers working for Tesla are some of the first people to prototype products for up and coming industries. Most mechanical engineers for Tesla work about 10 hours per day. A few products designed by Tesla include:

    • Model S
    • Model X
    • Tesla Supercharger
    • Tesla Home Battery

Some services offered by Tesla include:
    • Software design
    • Automotive service
    • Leasing Cars

Mechanical engineers at Tesla work in small teams in order to focus on innovation and excellence. There is very limited sturcture within the Tesla workplace. As long as mechanical engineers meet their deadlines and requirements their hours are fairly flexible. The average salary of a mechanical engineer working at Tesla is around $96,000/year. Lastly, Tesla mechanical engineers work all over the country.
